Course Description: The purpose of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course is to provide students with an academic and working knowledge to become state certified and to provide basic life support patient care. It provides the basic concepts of emergency care which are needed to function as an EMT. This class will be helpful for other healthcare fields and is a prerequisite for the Paramedic Course.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, a student should be able to:

  1. Identify patient treatment procedres performed by Emergency Medical Technician - Basic.
  2. State the medical and legal responsibilities of an EMT.
  3. Discuss the basic anatomy and physiology of the human systems.
  4. Demonstrate proper patient assessment techniques.
  5. Demonstrate proper use of the automated external defibrillator.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate treatment protocols for both medical and traumatic emergencies.
  7. Describe proper responses to environmental emergencies.
  8. Demonstrate proper lifting, moving, and extricating procedures.
  9. Describe emergency childbirth procedures.
  10. Demonstrate airway maneuvers and oxygen therapy.
  11. Demonstrate proper immobilization and splinting techniques.
  12. Explain patient preparation for transport in either an ambulance or helicopter.
  13. Describe appropriate ambulance protocols.
  14. Identify proper procedures for dealing with suspected hazardous materials.
